Moving into Student Accommodation for the First Time

Your first time setting foot at your student halls can be a nerve-wracking experience. It can result in all kinds of small mistakes, but this can easily be avoided if you slow down and pay attention to a few things.

Here’s a checklist of 4 things to keep in mind:

1. Like travelling in any other circumstance, it’s a good idea to make a list and pack in good time before you leave. This way you can make sure you aren’t forgetting anything. This will definitely be a good idea if you live a long way away and don’t know when the next time you’ll be going back home will be. This will also avoid frustrating loved ones by having them need to mail you some of your possessions.

2. Double-check your emails and information on accommodation check-in protocol. Knowing where to be, and what time to be there, can save you some time and stress. You’ll want to avoid any rush that can cause you to miss out on other important things too. It’s best to re-check and ask others once you’ve arrived if you are unsure.

3. Don’t neglect your flatmates. First impressions often stick so ensure you and your fellow residents start off on the right foot the first time you meet. After all, you will be living with them for a year, so make the effort to get along. Get all your stuff moved in and finalise a time where you can all sit down, talk, and get to know each other.

4. Explore your new area. It’ll be your residence for at least a year, so start looking for local hotspots, bars, supermarkets and fast-food restaurants. The sooner you get your bearings, the more comfortable you’ll become, and the better the time you’ll have.
